Dr. Modadugu V Gupta

Dr. Gupta retired from WorldFish Center, Malaysia in August 2004 as its Assistant Director General after being with the Center for 15 years from 1989-2004. He was also Research Coordinator of International Network on Genetics in Aquaculture (INGA) from 1996 to 2004 and coordinated aquaculture genetics research in 13 member countries from Asia, Pacific and Africa. Before joining WorldFish Center, Gupta worked with FAO of United Nations as Fish Culture Expert in Bangladesh and before that for 9 years (1977-1986) worked with United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UN-ESCAP) in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam as Fish Culture and Breeding Expert. Before joining UN, Gupta worked with Indian Council of Agricultural Research from 1962-1976.

His expertise spanning over 44 years is in: Aquaculture and fisheries research and development; Development of national strategic plans in developing countries; Research planning and management; Research & development project formulation; Review and evaluation of research and development projects; Capacity building among developing country scientists; and Networking and donor and partner relations.

Gupta has been a Consultant to:

  • United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UN ESCAP);
  • Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) Investment Center, The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank; Commonwealth Secretariat, etc
  • Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID);
  • United States Agency for International Development (USAID);and Agriculture Research Center of Netherlands;

Gupta supervised post-graduate students; examiner for Ph.D thesis of Universities in India and abroad; Editor, Member of editorial board of journals; reviewer of articles for many fisheries journals;

Presently he is: (i) Senior Research Fellow, WorldFish Center, (ii) advising Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in its fisheries and aquaculture programs (iii) Member of Scientific Advisory Council of Rajiv Gandhi Center for Aquaculture, India; (iv) providing advice to various research programs in India.

Awards/ Honors Received:

  • Recipient of 2005 World Food Prize
  • Recipient of medal from Indian Council of Agricultural Research for outstanding team research for developing low-input, high-output aquaculture technologies;
  • A Prize for best Overseas Indian Fisheries Scientist named after – Dr. TVR Pillay and Dr. MV Gupta by Indian Fisheries Society;
  • Honorary Fellow, Association of Aquaculturists;
  • Fellow, Indian Association of Systematic Zoologists and Inland Fisheries Society of India

Gupta published over 140 papers in journals, books, conference proceedings, etc.
