Prof. Zhou graduated from Shanghai Fisheries College in 1964 after studying Marine Fisheries and majoring in Industrial Fishing. From 1979 – 1982, he studied fish behaviour at Marine Lab, Aberdeen, U.K. as a visiting scholar. Since the early 1980’s Prof. Zhou has worked at Shanghai Fisheries University, published more than 70 papers and textbooks in the field of mechanics of fishing gear, fish swimming behaviour, fishery management and higher education in fisheries.He has been a Chairman of the Shanghai Fisheries Society and a Deputy Director of the China Society of Fisheries, among his many contributions to the fisheries community. He is also involved in international fisheries conservation and management activities mainly associated with FAO, AFS and WFS. Since 1983, Prof. Zhou has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Fisheries of China (in Chinese, published by the China Fisheries Society), member of the editorial advisory board of Fisheries Research (ELSEVIER) and Environment Biology of Fish (Springer). He was the Dean of the College of Marine Science at SFU and the President of SFU from 1996 – 2004.
At present he is the Executive Director of the Chinese Fishery Development Strategy Study Center, Member of the 5th Committee of the Academic Degree of State Council of China, the advisor for Chinese Deep Sea Fishery Association, and a Councilor of the 7th and 8th Councils of the Asia Fisheries Society. He plays an active role as an advisor to the Chinese fishing industry and the government. He is also Deputy Director of the Shanghai Research Society for Pacific Region Economic Development, Deputy Director of Shanghai Society of Fisheries Economics, and a member of the 7th Science & Technical Committee, Ministry of Agriculture, China.
