Asian sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch, 1790), is one of the most farmed marine fish in Malaysia since the 1970 s and is predominantly cultured at present.Although it has been farmed for some time, there is no systematic breeding programme in place.Local hatcheries rely heavily on wild and imported broodstock.However, imported stocks do not guarantee improved quality and even increase the chances of introducing pathogens into the country.

A total of 13 people participated in this meeting in the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Guest House meeting room. Participants at the meeting were: Prof. Liping Liu, AFS President (Shanghai Ocean University); Prof. Neil Loneragan (Immediate Past President, Murdoch University); Prof. Murni Marlina Abd Karim (Secretary, Universiti Putra Malaysia); Dr. Nur Leena Wong W.S. (Treasurer, Universiti Putra Malaysia); Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Lal (Director of Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, ); Dr. Joykrushna Jena (Deputy Director Indian Council of Agricultural Research), Prof. Wilfredo Campos (University of the Philippines Visayas); Prof. Marieta Sumagaysay (University of the Philippines Tacloban College) ;Prof. Budy Wiryawan (IPB University); Prof. Indah Susilowati (University of Diponegoro); Prof. Xuxiong Huang (Shanghai Ocean University,); Prof. Han-jia Lin (Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, NTOU) and Ms. Malathi Thanamsegaram (AFS Executive Officer, Universiti Putra Malaysia).The meeting elected the Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary of AFS and Councillors to serve on working committees of the 15th Council. It also discussed the possible convenors, places and times for the Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA8), the International Symposium for Aquaculture and Fisheries Education (ISAFE5) and the next Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (15AFAF). We noted that the next Gender in Fisheries and Aquaculture Symposium (GAFS9) will be held at AIT in Thailand in September 2025 and that the next Diseases in Asian Aquaculture conference will be in Chennai in October 2025.The Council also discussed a schedule of Council meetings and continuing the webinar series for the Asian Fisheries Society.
